Jesus Was Jewish. But How Jewish? A Conversation with James Crossley

Jesus was Jewish. Most Christians know that. But what difference does it actually make?

We readily acknowledge Jesus' Jewish identity. Yet we often interpret his teaching, his conflicts, and even his mission as though his Jewishness were incidental to understanding him. We want a Jewish Jesus. But perhaps not too Jewish.

In this episode of The Bible within Judaism, I speak with biblical scholar James Crossley about the Jewishness of Jesus and why it matters for how we read the Gospels. Our conversation presses beyond the familiar acknowledgment that Jesus was Jewish to a more consequential question: What happens when we take his Jewishness seriously?
