Learning Together This Fall: Courses and Lectures at the Schubach Library
How does Genesis explain the presence of evil in the world? What can the book of Job teach us about homelessness? How do the Gospels portray Jewish law? Who is the suffering servant in Isaiah? These are some of the questions we will explore this fall at the Schubach Library & Study Center.
Our Fall 2026 program includes four Sunday afternoon lectures and two short courses. Together, they offer opportunities to study the Jewish Scriptures and the New Testament with scholars who bring years of teaching and research to their subjects.
Fall Lectures
Our lectures will meet on selected Sundays from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Schubach Library & Study Center in Skokie.
September 13: Ingrid Faro, “Genesis and the Problem of Evil”
October 11: Sophia Magallanes-Tsang, “‘There’s No Place Like Home’: Homelessness in the Book of Job”
November 8: Paul Sloan, “The Heavy Burdens of the Pharisees: Legal Rulings or Iniquity?”
December 6: Andrew Abernethy, “Isaiah’s Suffering Servant: Israel, the Prophet, and/or the Messiah”
Each lecture will give participants an opportunity to explore an important biblical question with a scholar who specializes in the subject.
Fall Courses
Our courses meet from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Participants may attend in person at the Library or join online through Microsoft Teams.
Ephesians: Cosmic Conquest and Gentile Inclusion
September 15–October 13 | Tuesday evenings
Instructor: Zachary Wagner
This five-week course will explore the letter to the Ephesians and its account of cosmic conflict, Christ’s victory, and the inclusion of Gentiles in the people of God.
Returning to God: A Theology of Repentance
November 16–December 7 | Monday evenings
Instructor: Joel Willitts
This four-week course will trace repentance from the Jewish Scriptures through ancient Judaism and the apostolic movement, asking what it means for individuals and communities to return to God.
